Opening reception success: inspiring story behind art sale at the 'Anything Goes' group show

Updated: Jul 17

I am thrilled to share that I am part of the Chilliwack Visual Arts Association's summer art show at the O’Connor Group Art Gallery, aptly titled Anything Goes. Running from July 10 to August 10, this eclectic exhibit showcases a delightful array of inspirational artworks, each as unique as the artists behind them. Members were allowed to submit up to two pieces, and I'm overjoyed to announce that my piece, Flutter-by, sold on the day of the opening reception!

The opening day was nothing short of enchanting, as I wandered through the gallery filled with vibrant and diverse artistic expressions. It felt like a sacred space where creativity flourished, and the pieces had the potential to inspire those who viewed them.

One of the most profound experiences was meeting the kind soul who purchased my original watercolor painting entitled Flutter-by. He shared a moving story about how my artwork deeply resonated with him. His late wife adored butterflies, and during her time in hospice, he would comfort her by saying she was a caterpillar in a cocoon, ready to emerge as a beautiful butterfly. Every time he sees butterflies, he thinks of her spirit soaring free. When he saw Flutter-by , he was immediately drawn to it, feeling a deep connection to its symbolism. This encounter reminded me of the power of art to uplift the human spirit and is indeed an inspiring story behind an art sale!

Now, let me tell you why I named my piece Flutter-by. Ever since I was a child, I believed that the butterfly should be called a flutter-by because it flutters by more than it has anything to do with butter! Interestingly, the name "butterfly" actually comes from the Old English word "buterfleoge," which literally means "butter fly." This term likely referred to the yellow brimstone butterfly, which has a buttery color [Source 1, Source 2 ]. Although "flutter-by" is a whimsical notion rather than historical fact, ruminating over such linguistic wordplays continues to inspire my artwork.

The true joy of this show extends beyond the sale of my art; it lies in the connection and impact it has on people. I intentionally pray over each piece I create, so that it will have its maximum positive impact in the lives of those who view and/or purchase my artwork. Knowing that my piece brought comfort and inspiration to someone AND getting to meet that someone are the greatest rewards! "Anything Goes" is a celebration of art’s ability to touch hearts and minds, and I am honoured to be a part of it.
